The History of St. Patty’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day, otherwise known as St Patty’s Day, is a universally celebrated holiday with lots of beer and green. In this 3 series post, Colorado Party Rentals honors this annual tradition with a spotlight on March 17th. So, beyond the beer and leprechauns, do we really know why we celebrate this holiday? We’ll give you reason to celebrate this year with the history behind the tradition and get some ideas on ways to celebrate right here in Denver!

Who Is St Patrick?

St. Patrick's DaySt Patrick was born Maewyn Succat to a wealthy family in the UK, or Scotland- there are differing accounts. He was kidnapped by Celtic raiders at the age of 16 years old and spent several years as a slave in Ireland. This is the stuff movies are made of. At this point, the young man was learning the ways of the Celtic Druids, a group of people who were widely known as sorcerers practicing animal and human sacrifice. Through a dream, Patrick was told how to escape by way of ship, back to England.   While in England, he had another dream, in which he was told to return to the people who had imprisoned him in Ireland and build a foundation of Christianity through Catholicism for the Druids. The task was difficult and dangerous, life threatening at times, however, he persisted and was able to free the people from the oppressive ways of their former culture. He also was instrumental in bringing alcohol to Ireland, as well as transforming the symbol of the shamrock into something positive rather than the negative connotations it held previously.

Why Green?

Each year millions in Ireland celebrate St Patrick’s Day with parades and family gatherings. Green is worn to symbolize the return of spring as well as the Irish culture. Ireland is known as the ‘Emerald Isle’, named for it’s lush green landscape. It’s an American tradition that probably started around the 1700’s that promoted wearing green on this holiday. The thought was that if you wore green you were invisible to leprechauns.
